December 2008 Vol 2, Issue 12

Dear Stacy,
Reindeer

Seasons' greetings! This newsletter features many highlights of some exciting events that happened in the past month. In this hectic time, we should all remember the terrific things we have to be thankful for, and spend our holidays celebrating family and friends.

If you are one of those folks who tried to attend my show at Our Lady of Consolation (the Hearts & Holly show) on November 22nd - you have my sincere apologies. On our way back our National Geographic trip in Washington DC, our flight was delayed in Cleveland. As a result, we were stranded there overnight until the next afternoon... and we missed the entire show! Believe me - no one is more disappointed than I - the organizers told there were a number of folks looking for my booth.

To make up for that missed opportunity, I am hosting a one-day sales event at Robinette's Winery & Gift Barn THIS Saturday, December 6th. Come enjoy wine tasting, shop for gifts and enjoy delicious treats from the Apple Haus. Support your local economy by shopping Local First! Hint... come see me for a coupon for a $1.00 off one of the best-tasting pies in West Michigan!

I am also applying for a booth at Rockford High School on December 13th for this year's Close Up Craft Fair. Proceeds from the craft sale will go to send current RHS students to Washington D.C. for a close up look at our nation's government. I will send a quick notice out if I am accepted into that event as it will be my last official "show" for 2008.

Congratulations to Vanessa Martinez of Holland, Michigan. You've won a FREE 8x10 print for forwarding this email to a friend who appreciates photography and the outdoors. You could win a print too! I only ask that you play fair - no one likes to receive unwanted email...

An additional congratulations to Lee Waterman, who has also won an 8x10 print of her choice for stopping by my booth in November at the Junior Golden Rule Christmas Bazaar at Spectrum Butterworth.
Moments from Lansing
On November 10th, Russ and I attended a reception at Governor Jennifer Granholm and First Gentleman Daniel Mulhern's residence. Yes - you read that correctly - at their residence in Lansing!

A group of artists were chosen to have their works featured in the Governor's Residence, through a competition that concluded in July. It was coordinated through the Midland Center for the Arts, and all of us went through three-round jurying process which concluded with the First Family selecting the final pieces themselves. All of the artists represented should be very proud of their accomplishments. The pieces are displayed beautifully throughout the home.

The images featured are Serenity near the living room entrance, taken near Northport, and DH Day Farm from the Glen Haven area, which is hanging in the library:

It is truly an honor to have our Governor enjoying my photo images personally for a year. The pieces are available for purchase, but will remain in the home through July of 2009.

Niedzwiecki and GranholmGov. Granholm was kind enough to autograph her specially-commissioned edition of Whisper in the Woods Nature Journal for me, and I gave her one of my 2009 wall calendars to enjoy.

So - How Was DC?
White HouseThis truly was a year I won't ever forget. A week after the reception in Lansing, Russ and I left for our trip to Washington, DC to participate in the 2008 Adventurer of the Year Gala for National Geographic ADVENTURE magazine. So many readers have asked about our trip details - that I've decided to do a trip summary on my blog rather than attempt to re-tell the story many times over.

Vietnam WallThe full stories and some photos will be posted on my blog in four sections - one for each day of the trip. Watch for future "installements" - Day One is posted now:
  • Day One - Around Town
  • Day Two - Touring by Trolley
  • Day Three - Celebration!
  • Day Four - Breakfast at National Geographic
To recap, about a month ago - I learned I had won the Grand Prize in an email contest sponsored by National Geographic ADVENTURE Magazine. We received two all-access passes to their third annual Adventurer of the Year Celebration, to include our flight and accommodations. I was chosen after submitting a short email statement describing a favorite adventure destination in 150 words or less. Many of you have asked if it will be published - truth be told, I'm pretty sure this was random drawing. We were just plain fortunate enough to have been selected!

The highlight of the trip, of course - was meeting the Adventurers themselves. You can't really appreciate the scope of why they were being honored, unless you read their amazing stories in detail. I strongly encourage you to do so. You can pick up the December 2008/January 2009 issue of ADVENTURE (on newsstands now), or see their stories online: Meet the 2008 Adventurers of the Year

National Geographic ADVENTURE logo

We personally met the following Adventurers at the National Geographic Society headquarters:
Some of the Adventurers honorees could not attend:
Other interesting folks we met included:
  • 2008 Hall of Fame honoree Rick Ridgeway
  • 2007 Adventurer of the Year honoree Andrew Skurka
  • Boyd Matson - host of the National Geographic Explore TV series
  • ADVENTURE'S Editor in Chief, John Rasmus
  • and staff members of ADVENTURE and National Geographic magazines
Over breakfast, one of the Adventurers commented how fortunate it was a photographer was chosen to receive the trip. Yes...very fortunate. We can't thank all of the folks at ADVENTURE enough for their hospitality - but we're trying!

Approaching the New Year ...
niedzwieckiAs we approach the New Year, we are collectively holding our breath waiting to see what changes the new leadership will bring for our struggling economy and times of stress.

I believe all of us should start thinking creatively to pull ourselves up and dust ourselves off. We can each take a bit of responsibility to shape better times ahead. It wouldn't hurt many to return to the ethics of hard work, self-reliance and helping our neighbor - those values made things happen in this country in the first place! Our forefathers and pioneers exemplified the phrase, "Just do it!". They didn't whine about their troubles to the media (and they had just as many - if not more than today's society). They coped with difficult times and persevered. Eventually, we will too...

Happy Birthday wishes go out to sister-in-law Pat Nedwick, niece Jodi Peters, and great-niece Brianna Nedwick - and to friends Alicia Robinette, Lisa Perkins, Doug VanDyke, Brandon Lubenow, Morey Beemer, Mark Wolfe and Ron DeRade!

Remember, if you'd like - remind me of an important date so I can include your special day in the next newsletter!

Many blessings in 2009 ...

Stacy
