| Greetings! |
Ahhh...
the sweet days of summer are almost upon us! Concerts, lake
trips, art fairs, festivals, fireworks, picnics, fishing,

arts event in the nation! It's a three-day celebration of
sights, sounds, smells and tastes (mmmm ... check out the list of food
vendors this year!). There are multiple stages with
performing artists to enjoy.

Festival Regional Arts Juried
Exhibition
|
Speaking of festival
2008 - don't forget to check out the Festival
Regional Arts Exhibition inside the Old Art Museum. I am pleased to announce three
pieces have been accepted into this
exhibit!
Juried this year by Daleene
Menning, David
Lubbers, and Jay
Constantine - there were 841 submissions of artwork, with
377 pieces chosen to be in the festival 2008 Regional Arts
Exhibit. There are 210 artists represented in this show (some
artist, like myself, were fortunate to have multiple entries
accepted). See PDF list of
all accepted artists.
Twenty-four awards will be
given out to the artists worth in total value of over $4000.
Additionally, seven sponsors agreed to provide at least an
additional $4000 in Purchase Awards (meaning artwork will
purchased by these sponsors for their own enjoyment). Keep
your fingers crossed until reception time for me! In 2006, my
first entry into this show earned a Kent County Purchase
Award.
Please mark
your calendar for the opening reception! It will be held on
this Friday, May 30th from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Family and
friends are welcome (and encouraged!). I would love to see you
there. I'm going to try to get
there about 6:00 pm (all based on snaking though
rush-hour traffic and never-ending road
construction!).
The reception and exhibit are held in
will be held in the Old Federal Building (formerly the Grand
Rapids Art Museum) at 155 N. Division
in Grand Rapids. This is the same location the exhibit has
been in since 1992.
The galleries will be open
for public viewing on:
- Saturday, May 31 from noon until 6:00
- Sunday, June 1 from noon until 6:00
and during festival 2008
- Friday, June 6, from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm
- Saturday, June 7, from 10:00 am until 9:00 pm
- Sunday, June 8, from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm

Michigan Photo Competition
Finalist
|
I
received an exciting email in mid-May from the Art Center of
Battle Creek:
"Thank you for submitting your entries
for the Michigan Photo Competition at the Art Center of
Battle Creek. There were
many quality entries judged on an anonymous basis by juror
Anthony Thompson, Associate Professor at Grand Valley State
University. The judging has been completed and we are pleased
to inform you that the following entries have been accepted
into this year's competition:
Again, congratulations and thank
you for adding value to the Art Center of
Battle Creek through the provision of quality
work!"
The exhibition will open with an award reception on June 8th from
2:00 - 4:00 PM. The works will remain on display from June 8th - 28th,
2008.
I'd like to encourage all my friends to
check out this exhibit throughout the month of June!
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend the reception
itself - as it is the same Sunday afternoon as the last day
of festival
2008. However - I'm thrilled to have placed five images
(out of eight submitted) on my first try for this particular
juried show. I'll just have to make it to the exhibit the
following week after the
reception. | |

Design Spotlight: A Little
Variety!
|
It has been said
"variety is the spice of life", and lately, my recent design
projects have been pretty tasty!
Take a peek at
the new
website for Gaines Charter Township! Their previous
site was very outdated, and needed a lot of structural
re-organization in order for visitors to find the forms
and information they need. I was able to implement a
better way for their staff and board to share important
news and event
information. They have been very pleased with the
new design, and have received quite a bit of positive
feedback from site visitors.
A client with whom
I've had a working relationship with for almost four
years now is Wedgwood Christian Services - specifically
their Pure
Passion for Fashion (P2) projects. I have been doing
yearly promotional material for them, to include
postcards, posters and fliers. Right now I'm working
on some print advertisements, and recently did a flier
promoting a workshop sponsored by COACH
(Coalition on Adolescent Choices and
Health).
Another client with whom I've had some
fun with is Chrissa Ahrens, of Ahrens
Photography in Rockford. In the beginning of the
year, I designed a logo for her. She then went on to
create a website for herself, and now we're going to
work on some new business cards, letterhead and matching
envelopes.
Other upcoming projects include a photo
restoration project, website
designs (for new clients and existing clients) and
even some promo
materials for my own husband Russ
(who is working as a sleight-of-hand artist for the West
Michigan Whitecaps this
summer).

Lemmen-Holton Opens This Month
|
If you live in the Grand Rapids area,
you may have seen large billboards simply stating "www.june30.org". This website showcases the
opening of new
Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion - one of the most advanced
cancer facilities in the region.
On Sunday, June 22, 2008 - there
is a public Open House with self-guided tours throughout the
building. There will be much to see, in addition to the
beautiful new facility - as there are 286 pieces of framed art
and 6 sculptures representing about 100 artists. Approximately
50% of the artists are from Michigan.
On that Sunday
afternoon, my family members will come to see my 46 photo
images that were chosen to hang in the permanent
collection. I'd love to see a few other familiar faces there
too - please contact
me if you think you may
attend. The Open House is from 1 - 5 pm, and is not a
"formal" affair. Please come say hello and enjoy the
afternoon!
Visit my
bookstore to purchase your own copy of The Healing
Collection. The book features almost all of the
images used for the Lemmen-Holton
project.

Joy and Fun - A Season
in the Sun!
|
Most of
us who live in the northern areas of the United States can
agree that we love the time between Memorial Day and Labor
Day. It's a time to celebrate all that is wonderful about the
outdoors. Other seasons are all uniquely beautiful as well,
but the sheer joy of long summer days holds a special place
for many of us.
I'll
leave you with a few parting reasons to get out there and
enjoy ...
- Fireflies
- Sunset afterglow along a lake
- Campfire stories (and marshmallows, of course!)
- Morning songbirds
- Fresh juicy berries, tomatoes and sweet corn
- Reeling in that huge fish
- Picnics in the park
You don't need to spend a lot
of money to enjoy nature. Some folks think they need the
latest sports equipment, camping gear or expensive clothing to
be properly "outfitted" for the outside. Many of us are
worried about the rising gas prices and wonder how we're going
be able to travels this summer.
Pssst! Wanna know a
secret? You can grab a blanket, make some sandwiches, bring a
favorite book and head to the nearest local neighborhood park.
You'll have just as nice of an experience. Seriously - in the
last few years, I have been in some gorgeous local parks.
Often, I look around and realize I'm the only person there! I
wonder where everyone else is? Make good use of your tax
dollars - get out there and appreciate your own city, county
and state parks. Visit my photo gallery
at MyParkPhotos.com and take a look at what treasures are
in our own neighborhoods.
Many blessings to you and yours
...
