July 2008 Vol 2, Issue 7

Greetings!
Probably the single biggest question I've been asked over the past couple of weeks is - did you (and your booth) survive the storms during Festival?

Lucky Strikes

Yes - I'm happy to report not a single item was damaged, thank goodness! The weather could have been a bit better (OK - a lot better! According to board president David Mix,  "We've never had a Festival that had to close three days in a row. That's the first in 39 years!"). But - I sure enjoyed  meeting new folks, sharing a smile with a few long-time friends and experiencing the unique atmosphere that is special to Festival alone.

The good news is - my next show will be in a nice, stable, dry, air-conditioned and non-stormy indoor setting! Read on to get the details of my solo exhibit at the Glen Arbor Art Association.

To see my other art events, visit Niedzwiecki Now - my new online event calendar. I'm doing a fun promotion this month! Be sure to scroll down near the end of this eNewsletter to catch the details on how you can send this newsletter to a friend and gain the chance for a free 8x10 print of your choice!

Speaking of free 8x10 prints - congratulations to Sherri Schuitema of Walker - you've won a free 8x10 print of your choice for your entry slip at the Lemmen-Holton Cancer Pavilion on June 30!
Solo Exhibit in Glen Arbor
Glen Arbor Art Association BuildingAfter my Glen Arbor Art Association artist in residence experience last fall, I decided to become a member of their fine organization. They are very much a supportive group of folks who share the enthusiasm in promoting the arts for all to enjoy, by teaching classes, organizing exhibits and holding events that promote understanding and appreciation of the arts.

Now that I have joined, I have use of their wonderful exhibit space, so I've decided to host my own gallery show! Cards, matted prints, new posters and framed pieces will be offered for purchase.

My exhibit is a two-day show only - July 18 & 19:

Open gallery hours:
Friday, July 18, 10:00 am - 3:00 pm
Saturday, July 19, 10:00 am- 6:00 pm

Great Lakes Town Hall Guest Speaker
LogosLike the town meetings on which it is modeled, the Great Lakes Town Hall provides a "space" where residents from all across the Great Lakes basin - and all walks of life within the basin - can come together to identify common concerns, set the political agenda, share and develop collective solutions, and demand - as a public - that the Lakes are clean, abundant, and natural for generations to come. The Town Hall is a program of the Biodiversity Project.

In case you missed it - here's a consolidated list of the articles that I posted at Great Lakes Town Hall as their Guest Speaker the week of June 16 - 20:
Each week the Town Hall solicits thoughtful contributions from Great Lakes writers, scientists, business owners, politicians, agency staff, environmentalists, artists, concerned citizens and more. Guest speakers contribute content on a Great Lakes topic of their choice for five days. The guest speakers are only limited by their imaginations and are un-edited. Feel free to post your comments in response to my postings!
Photo Competition Results
EyeSeeYouJust a quick update on several photo competitions I've taken part of! In June, I had five pieces in the Michigan Photo Competition at the Art Center of Battle Creek. My image of a Great Horned Owl titled Eye See You was given a Purchase Award by the Meijer, Inc. (Columbia Avenue Store).

My other pieces that were accepted into this year's competition were:
The exhibit is over, but I hope perhaps you have a chance to visit, as a very diverse body of photographic work is represented. The other four pieces, which are tastefully framed and matted, are available for purchase - please inquire.

Meanwhile... Headed to Lansing?

SerenityThe Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art of the Midland Center for the Arts is working in conjunction with Governor's Residence Artist's Program to assist the Governor in putting together a body of artwork to embellish the Governor's Residence in Lansing.

I submitted four works for consideration, and just found out over the holiday weekend, that two of the pieces have been considered for inclusion in the project. That means these two photos (Serenity and DH Day Farm) have to this point, have cleared two phases of a three-phase jury to be included in the final exhibition.

DH Day FarmAt this point, I now must take the actual framed pieces to the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art in Midland next week, where the staff of the museum will load and transport the all the works to the Governor's residence. The third and final selection of works will be completed by the First Family themselves. The First Family will make their final selections July 28th and the works will be installed July 28 and 29, 2008. An opening reception will be held in Fall of 2008 and all participating artists will receive an invitation to attend.

Selected works will be on exhibit in the Governor's residence from August 2008 through July of 2009. Come on everyone - send your "good luck" vibes this way - I'd like to get invited to the reception! Stay tuned - I will most likely will be able to report the outcome of this event in the August eNewsletter.
Kent County Purchase Award at Festival 2008
In Their Loving Hands photographUpon attending the reception for the juried art show portion of festival 2008, I was pleased to discover my photograph - In Their Loving Hands (Gerald R. Ford Funeral) - received a County of Kent Purchase Award!

This literally means the photograph was purchased for its asking price, and will probably hang in some County office facility. Since the Ford Funeral was such a huge part of Grand Rapids history, I'm so pleased to know this piece will be displayed someplace where others can appreciate and reflect on the significance of the event. This image was too important to be hanging up just in my own living room - that's for sure!

This is my second time being honored with same award. At festival 2006 my image Transformation was purchased, and it was equally as exciting because it was my first try ever at entering this well-known and highly competitive show.

EyeSeeYou

Now I only wish I knew... WHERE these two pieces end up being displayed? Perhaps I'll have to do a little investigation to find out - which could be a bit fun in itself.

The Joys of July!
niedzwieckiJuly is always been one of my favorite months. Yeah - it's hot. Yeah - it's humid. But there's something about being in the full-blown epicenter of summer that is so wonderful! Longer hours of sunshine fading to starry twilight, the first taste of veggie and fruit crops (fresh cherries, anyone?), the cicadas humming their crazy songs - July is a feast of sight, sound and taste.

Maybe I've always favored July because it's my birthday month (yeah - I don't just have a birthday - I have a birthday MONTH - ask my family!). When I was little, I lived in a 200-year old farmhouse with my grandparents in upstate New York. A wood-burning stove was still used to cook each meal. My grandmother would still willingly bake my birthday cake on a 95-degree day by firing up the wood stove! The kitchen could easily hit 110 degrees, and of course - there was no air conditioning. It would be so unbearably hot in the house once the cake was ready, we'd have to go out and sit on the front porch for the rest of the evening. But being on the porch on a summer evening was a wonderful way to enjoy the cake (along with a very large scoop of ice cream). Now I simply ask for a key lime birthday pie... no baking required.

My point is though - do something you LIKE this month. Endulge yourself in something special. Eat a delicious waffle cone - and don't worry about the caloric intake for a moment. Take a dip in a lake. Catch a butterfly (and release it, please!). Read a good book. Get on a blanket and look up at the summer sky. Don't let the summer evenings slip away until you find yourself wondering where the summer has gone? Make note of a few precious moments you truly enjoyed this July for your memory archives.

In closing - a special thank you to Rebecca Cajka, Tad & Sarah Smedes, Barbara Schilling, Carrie Elzinga, Bill Place, Mary Harig and Teresa Newmarch for their assistance at my Festival booth. I truly appreciate all of you!

Many blessings ...

Stacy
